The Theory & Practices of Productivity

What is Productivity?
It reflects country’s ability to produce more output by better combining inputs, a process that is made possible by new ideas, technological innovations, as well as process and organizational innovations.
Productivity is about “working smarter”, rather than “working harder”.
Paul Krugman said that productivity isn’t everything, but in the long run, it is almost everything.

Productivity Organizations
Productivity organizations exist in diverse forms across virtually all developed nations and emerging economies. These entities can be classified into various categories, including government-supported organizations, private institutions, CSOs, and scientific institutions, with many embodying a hybrid structure. Their objective is to enhance productivity through research, innovation, and the implementation of best practices, thereby contributing to economic growth and societal advancement.

Productivity in Ethiopia
Ethiopia has made significant strides in promoting productivity through various organizations over the years. Notably, it was one of the founding members of the Pan-African Productivity Organization, highlighting its commitment to enhancing productivity on the continent. While there is no singular entity dedicated exclusively to productivity, initiatives such as the Ethiopia Produces Movement, along with the Ministry of Labor and Skills and the Ministry of Innovation and Technology, serve similar purposes by fostering an environment conducive to productivity improvement and innovation within the country.
